Garland
Industries, formerly Lew Manufacturing Co., was founded by
Louis Lanoie over 75 years ago. For many years, the company
manufactured mechanisms and other components for well-known
USA and European companies. Garland is one of the first patent
holders of the ballpoint twist mechanism.
Under the leadership of Raymond Lanoie, the son of Garland's founder,
the photo logo epoxy process was developed, and a patent was awarded
in 1965 for the flared top design. At this time, Garland began manufacturing
its own line of writing instruments. The photo logo process is imitated
today by other pen manufacturers, but the flared top continues to
be Garland's signature exclusively.
Louise Lanoie, granddaughter of the company's founder, is the President
of Garland Industries today. She has been involved with the company's
day-to-day operations for over 30 years. In 1991, she was named
President and became sole owner a year later. Garland is proud to
be certified as a woman-owned business through the Women's Business
Enterprise National Council.
Garland's manufacturing plant might be described as a typical New
England plant with all operations housed in a historical brick building.
Garland moved to this site in 1958 and quickly expanded to a present
day manufacturing capacity of 65,000 square feet. Many improvements
were made over the years, and today Garland is fully automated to
process orders, both large and small, quickly and efficiently.
