Product Colors

High Gloss Resin Barrel colors: Royal Blue, Red, Black, Forest Green, Maroon, Grey, Teal, Medium Green, Purple, Light Blue, Yellow, Pink, Brown, Light Green, Orange and White.

Color Variation: A quick note about product colors: The item colors displayed on our web site and in our product sample builder are shown to indicate the variety of selections that we offer. As a result of the browser and resolution limitations of the web, the actual color of the product will vary from the colors depicted on your screen.

Pricing Details

Set-up Charges: A set-up charge of $25.00 (G) will be billed on new and repeat orders for each item selected. However, if your order is for sets—pens & pencils—only 1 set-up charge will be billed, provided that all of the writing instruments have the same photo logo in the dome and the 50-piece minimum is met for both pens and pencils. Combinations of items with golden and chrome highlights are subject to the $25.00 (G) per item set-up charge.

Quantity Discounts: Combined quantity pricing discounts are offered on writing instruments from our USA-made Photo Logo Collections, provided that all items have the same photo logo in the dome and meet catalog minimum quantities per color and per series number. (Due to the photography process, the logos must also all be the same color.) For example, order 50 #390 series red pens and 50 #395 pencils in teal and use the 100-quantity price as long as all items have the same logo in the dome. Or, order 100 units of five different barrel colors and receive the 500-piece price. See the Imprinting Details section for information and pricing for change of barrel copy and imprint ink color. You may even combine items from our Founder's Collection with items from our other Photo Logo Collections, as long as all writing instruments have the same logo dome and meet minimum quantities per item number and color. Note: pens and pencils cannot be combined to meet the 50 piece minimum order. Set-up charges are additional except for sets, as detailed above.

Founder's Collection with Photo Logo Only — No Barrel Imprint: If your entire order is for 390 or 395 series' only and does not require barrel imprint, you may use the next quantity break for pricing. Please note that the catalog minimum of 50 pieces must still be met per item, per color, and pens and pencils may not be combined to reach the 50-piece minimum.

Orders under Catalog Minimum Quantities: Occasionally you might need just a few extra writing instruments to solve a big problem. Less than minimum orders are accepted for all models in our USA-made Photo Logo Writing Instrument Collections. An additional charge of $25.00 (x) will be added for each item ordered that does not meet the stated catalog minimums per model number, per color and per photo logo. (Pens and pencils are separate items.) Imprint copy is not available on less than minimum orders.

Sample Costs

Speculative Samples and Samples for Approval: Production time for custom samples is generally 3-4 working days. A custom sample of items from our Photo Logo Collections will be made from the colored artwork you submit for $12.00 (x) plus the first quantity price of the item ordered. A one-color imprint in a standard ink color is available on sample orders at an additional charge of $10.00 (x). Samples requiring a two-color imprint in standard ink colors will incur a $20.00 (x) additional charge. A maximum of 3 sample units may be ordered at sample pricing.

Random Samples: All Garland products may be purchased as random samples to provide you with a low cost option to evaluate the quality, styles, features, colors and customization techniques that are available for different items in our line. All random samples from our Founder's Collection will ship with a photo logo and a one-color imprint copy (both chosen at our discretion) to demonstrate our customization capabilities. You may select the model number, product color, and refill type for items of interest. Whenever possible, we will accommodate requests for random samples showing a specific standard ink color. Use end column pricing. Please note: random items are not returnable for credit.

Pre-Production Sample Program: To ensure that clients are completely satisfied with the customized product that they are purchasing, we require that a pre-production product proof be processed on new orders for 250 units or more. Our free sample for approval program, combined with shipment of the custom proof within 3 working days, make this a perfect and inexpensive solution for always satisfying the needs of the ultimate consumer. Sample proofs should be approved in writing, and can be waived by signing the waiver forms supplied by Garland. Why take the chance of being disappointed when you can be assured of success with a custom product proof!!

New Orders - Free Sample for Approval: When you place a new order for 250 units or more of any item in our line, we will provide a free custom sample for approval. The cost for the sample will be charged to you initially. A credit will then be issued if the sample is approved for production within 60 days from the date the sample is shipped. The rebate credit will include charges billed for: the price of one unit from our Photo Logo Collections, the $12.00 (x) spec sample setup charge, and the $10.00 (x) charge for one-color barrel imprint copy. Art charges, set-ups for two-color imprint or PMS color-matched inks, and shipping charges are not included in this rebate. Please note: due to varying setup processes, we cannot provide this rebate credit unless you are running 250 units of a single item number or model in our line.

Product Dimensions

Diameter and Length: Pens and pencils in our hefty series Founder's Collection are approximately .363" (9.22mm) in diameter. All writing instruments from our Photo Logo Collections are 5 1/4" long (133.35mm) and make great gifts when packaged as sets!

Photo Logo Area: Photo logos for our hefty series' pens and pencils are .390" (9.90mm) in diameter. Even though these dimensions appear to be quite small, most logos can be accommodated or cropped to fit within the circle. Many times, small words can either be eliminated from the logo dome or incorporated as engraving copy. Contact us for assistance if you are not sure that your logo is suitable for reproduction. In almost all instances, we can suggest an alternative solution. Also, the resin that is added to the dome provides a degree of magnification to the photo logo, making it appear larger and more brilliant.

Imprint Area: The Founder's Collection offers maximum area for multiple lines of imprint copy or for the combination of a logo and additional imprint copy. We imprint before we assemble your writing instruments and can therefore wrap the imprint copy completely around the circumference of the barrel. The maximum area that can be imprinted is 1 1/4" (31.75mm) long by 1" (25.4mm) high. The number of copy lines that can be included in the 1-inch high area will depend on the point size of the typestyle(s) selected. See Imprint Details for additional information and examples.

Cap Engraving Area: The maximum area that can be engraved is 1 1/3" (35.05mm) long by 7/32" (5.60mm) high. Two lines of standard font engraving can be engraved in this laser window.

Photo Logo Details

The signature of a USA-made Garland writing instrument is the flared top in which your logo or image is reproduced photographically and encased in clear epoxy resin at no charge. Your logo is visible each time the pen is taken in hand as a lasting reminder of your company, group or organization.

Full-Color Art: Due to our photography process, we need full-color artwork for the logo dome. Black and white or color-separated art cannot be used and will require art charges to make it ready for photography. Examples of good artwork are full color letterhead, business cards, brochures, decals, postcards and color photographs. Artwork must be clean, without eraser or staple marks. Please note that we cannot work from color slides or transparencies, reflective foil, metallic gold or silver. Metallic and fluorescent colors do not reproduce accurately in photography and should be avoided. For best reproduction, artwork should be at least 1" x 1" and no larger than 8". Size requirements are different for digital art as explained below. Be sure to indicate if only a portion of the art should be reproduced. The domes of writing instruments from our Photo Logo Collections are round, so look at your art and envision a circle around the logo or some part of your artwork.

Submission of Digital/Electronic Artwork: We accept both PC and Macintosh file formats for digital or electronic artwork. Artwork should be sent as EPS, TIFF or AI files to expedite your order and avoid possible artwork or make-ready charges. Since our software programs may read your PMS colors differently, you must provide us with the PMS colors that you are expecting to see in your photo logo reproduction. Digital and electronic photo dome art should be submitted at least 2" x 2" for maximum quality when reduced to size. The artwork may be e-mailed to: artwork@garlandpen.com. Please include your company name and address, your purchase order number, contact name and phone number to avoid delays in your order. All other inquiries and questions should be addressed to: customerservice@garlandpen.com. In addition to EPS, TIFF and AI files, other file formats may be acceptable. Call our customer service specialists with your file requirements prior to sending artwork.

Color Variation in Photo Logos: As mentioned earlier, your logo for the dome is reproduced photographically. Please expect some slight variations in your logo color since the photographic system does not see all PMS colors as they appear. Some colors are easily replicated, whereas others are not. If your logo color(s) must match exactly, we encourage you to order a low-cost pre-production sample for approval. What looks great to one client might be unacceptable to another. Samples avoid any chance of disappointment in the reproduction of your logo on your writing instruments.

Free Art Services: Should you wish to have a simple black and white logo reproduced in one color to match the barrel colors of writing instruments from our Photo Logo Collections, you will not be assessed an art charge. Any part of the logo or artwork that is submitted in black will be changed to color. These matches will not be exact to PMS colors but will coordinate closely with our USA made writing instruments. If you would like white lettering on a blue background, your artwork must be submitted with white letters on a black background. Typesetting Text: We can typeset letters or numbers to be used as artwork for the photo logo tops for $10.00 (x). If the text is to be changed to one color to match our barrel colors, that color change will be done at no charge.

Art Services: If full-color art is not available, our art department can work with you to colorize your black and white art. Please submit black and white art with your color changes clearly noted. PMS colors may be requested, but please specify if you're using the PMS reference chart for coated or uncoated stock. If not specified, we will match color from the coated section of the PMS color guide. We will match your art as close as the photographic process permits. In addition to colorizing black and white artwork, we can also retouch colored artwork if necessary. Retouching, reverses and simple color changes will be done for a fee of $25.00 (G) per logo. Complex or multiple color changes will be done at a fee of $50.00 (G) per logo. We will notify you about any additional art charges before processing your order.

No Artwork Available? Logo Selections and Suggestions: Generic/Stock logos are offered when a custom image is not available for the photo dome top. These logos are appropriate for fundraisers, company outings, retail gifts, anniversaries, weddings, safety programs and commemorative occasions. For instance, the rose is perfect for pens ordered for Administrative Professionals Day. The dollar sign works well for many companies in the financial services field. Our Eagle/Flag logo, coupled with your unique barrel text or copy, remains a very popular selection for many companies and organizations. Please keep in mind that logos are also available in plain colors to coordinate with our barrel colors. Our customer service specialists are available to discuss programs and recommend appropriate logos and writing instrument styles. Check out some of our stock/generic suggestions or contact us for other ideas.

*These logos are also available at no additional charge in colors to match our Photo Logo writing instruments. Please specify if you want these logos matched to the barrel color selected for your order. Note: Each color of a logo is a separate run and must meet the series' minimum quantity per logo color. Combined quantity pricing is not available for logos run in different colors.

Stress/Mood Logos: A magical mood/stress top is another suggestion for fun events or when a company or organization's logo doesn't quite work in the flared top. The logo dome will respond to changes in temperature. For some, just writing with this pen will trigger a color change in the dome top. Others may have to position their finger or palm on the dome for a minute or two to trigger the color change.

Barrel Imprinting Details — Founder's Collection Only

The Pen-O-Rama® writing instrument most often comes to mind when Garland is mentioned. This collection was the first series introduced with the flared dome design and continues to be very popular. The high-gloss molded resin barrel distinguishes the Founder's Collection from all other Garland pens. Information here pertains to barrel imprinting requirements and suggestions for our Founder's Collection only, the 390 and 395 series'.

One-Color Imprint on High Gloss Resin Barrel: There is a minimum run of 50 pens or pencils per barrel color, imprint copy and imprint color. Please note: pens and pencils may not be combined to reach the 50-piece minimum. You have two choices for one-color imprint on the barrel. Either send us high contrast camera-ready black and white artwork or have Garland typeset your message. There are no prep charges or per piece running charges to typeset or setup for a one-color imprint when selecting one of our 21 standard ink colors listed below. Changes of copy or ink color are available at $10.00 (x) per change. For example, if you would like to have 100 white barrels imprinted in dark blue, and 100 royal blue barrels printed in silver, one additional charge of $10.00 (x) will be incurred. Each change of copy, change of ink color, or change of barrel color must meet the 50-piece minimum.

Two-Color Imprint on High Gloss Resin Barrel: Due to the additional processing, there is a minimum of 100 pieces per barrel color, imprint copy and imprint color for ordering a two-color imprint copy on pens or pencils from our Founder’s Collection. Color-separated black and white artwork must be provided for a two-color imprint with custom logos, images or non-standard typestyles. There is an additional set-up charge of $35.00 (G) for the second-color imprint. The running charge for a two-color imprint copy is $.10 (G) per piece.

Change of copy or ink color change is not available for two-color imprint orders. Any change of copy or ink color would need to be submitted and priced as a separate order.
Standard Imprint Ink Colors for Founder's Collection

Ink colors available: White, Black, Silver, Gold, Process Blue, Reflex Blue,Yellow
PMS108, Orange PMS1505, Warm Red, Bright Red PMS 185, Maroon PMS 201, Pink PMS 225, Purple PMS 2597, Dark Blue PMS 281, Medium Blue PMS 300, Teal PMS 320, Dark Green PMS 3415, Medium Green PMS 347, Buff PMS 141, Brown PMS 463 and Dark Grey PMS 11.

The PMS numbers listed above are closest approximate PMS colors when printed on white barrels. "Close as possible" requests will be imprinted with one of the above standard ink colors. All other colors are considered a color match. Samples for approval are strongly recommended for your initial order especially when very close color matches are required. Actual imprint color may vary slightly from color chart, from exact color match request, or on repeat orders.

Imprint Set-Up and Color Selection: There are several tips we'd like to share with you for imprint set-up.

Your choice of barrel color combined with an ink color will affect the appearance of your message. Choose your barrel color and imprint color carefully so there is adequate contrast and a pleasing color combination. For example, our standard Purple ink is very close to PMS 2597 when printed on a white barrel, but would not necessarily look the same shade when printed on a grey barrel and would be almost invisible on a teal barrel. The color of the underlying barrel when combined with the ink color will most definitely affect the appearance of the product.

Contrast is very important when selecting your colors. Silver and gold imprint are metallics and always look great with our Founder's since they match the polished chrome and golden caps. Black and other very dark inks will stand out on light color barrels, but may provide less contrast on barrels that are not as dark, such as medium green. White, yellow and other very light imprint inks do not have the same depth of color as a metallic ink and do not always provide good coverage when imprinting a very large logo area on some of the dark barrel colors. But, printing several lines of standard size (8 to 10 point) text would look fine. Confusing? Yes, but much of the success of the customization process has to do with the size and style of a font, logo or typestyle, the detail and quality of the artwork submitted, the color combinations and contrast, and most importantly-personal preference. Subtle or dramatic. Classic or non-conformist. Are you trying to tout your message to the world, or discreetly reward or recognize important associates or achievements? It's your writing instrument and your choice!

So, how to proceed? Random samples can provide a starting point to check out standard ink colors on the various barrel colors. If your barrel artwork/copy or your color combinations are not workable, our product specialists will contact you with suggestions. Instead of running red on black, maybe we can try black on red. Or, upgrade to a two-color imprint using both red and black on white. Custom samples are always very much recommended when you are not sure exactly what you want or how your artwork and copy will reproduce. Our product sample charges have not been increased in over 20 years because we believe in the importance of custom samples that permit the buyer to evaluate exactly what they will be receiving. Samples resolve issues before they become problems.

Finally, please keep in mind that the taper of the barrel on the Founder's Collection (390-395 Series) will affect the appearance of your imprint copy if you have many long lines of copy that wrap around a large percentage of the barrel.

Color Match for Imprinted Inks: The first time formulation of a custom colored ink requires a minimum order run of 250 units. Please provide PMS colors and we will match as close as possible. The minimum quantity for repeat orders using the same formulation is 50 pens or pencils. A mixing charge of $30.00 (G) is billed for both new and repeat orders. Samples are required the first time that a new custom color is run. The color match charge will be billed on your sample and waived for your order, provided that the sample for approval is approved within 60 days from date of shipment.

Imprint Size and Imprint Typestyles: If black and white artwork is not available, Garland can typeset your message. It is important that you provide your desired message in typewritten form to avoid spelling and spacing errors. For the most pleasing barrel imprint, we recommend combining no more than three typestyles. You may choose from the typestyles presented below, indicating point size for each line. Unless specifically requested, all lines of copy will be centered. Please keep in mind that the maximum imprint area on the barrel is 1 1/4" (31.75mm) long x 1" (25.4mm) high.

Our 24 Standard Typestyles for Barrel Imprint (Not for engraving): Select from the following standard typestyles for your imprinted message. When ordering, please indicate your desired typestyle for each line of copy by using the numbers listed below. Actual typestyles are shown. The chart is available for reference only. Its purpose is to show the maximum number of characters (letters and spaces) that are available per inch of imprint for each of the typestyles offered. These typestyles are not offered for engraving on metal items.

Style #'s 2, 9, 10, 17, 19, 20 are not recommended for copy in CAPS except for initials or very short words.

The more letters and spaces per line you request, the smaller the type will have to be to accommodate your message. Your imprint copy size is determined by the length of your longest line. For the best possible appearance of your promotional message on the barrel, split lines of copy wherever possible. An example appears at right.

Artwork Requirements for Imprinting: When you send us artwork for imprinting, please provide high-contrast black and white camera-ready art. Faxed artwork is not acceptable. Please do not e-mail or send artwork "to size" since we will reduce your art to fit the copy area. Larger art provides better resolution for detailed and small copy. Whether submitting artwork by mail, digitally or by e-mail, the size for optimum reproduction is 2" x 4".

The cap of the 390 and 395 series' in our Founder's Collection can also be engraved to further enhance the value of your next gift or promotion. The Founder's Collection has always been a top seller for us, and is perfect when you need the flexibility of an imprinted barrel to provide multiple lines of copy and large amounts of information. Now you can add significant personal meaning to your corporate or organizational message by engraving on the metal cap of these items. Ideal for individual names, initials, awards or recognition. Select from any of our nine standard engraving fonts. Maximum of 2 lines. Limited to 28 characters and spaces per line. Engraving charges will be $1.00 (G) per piece for either one line of personalization or two lines of repetitive copy. Combine the best of both customization processes-the practicality and versatility of imprinting with the individual personalization that is available only with engraving. You can now have it all with our Flagship Founder's Collection!

To avoid spelling errors and confusion with upper/lower case letters, we request that you submit a typewritten list of names or copy to be engraved. Keep in mind that lists typed in CAPS will be engraved in caps unless otherwise instructed. Also, all engraving is done at the time the order is placed and processed and before your writing instruments are assembled. Due to our production methods, items cannot be held for future engraving.

Refills, Lead, Erasers

For twist pens, you can choose from black or blue ink in medium or fine point. Our mechanical twist pencils use a standard 7mm lead and include an eraser and several replacement leads underneath the cap. Our USA-made ballpoint pens use a #1 Universal Refill (Cross-type), so replacement cartridges should be readily available at your local stores.
